Site Excavation
Now that all plant life is dead, you need to excavate or rotary hoe in order to ensure there is no obstructing root system remaining. It is also the time to assess your existing soil.
If the soil is reasonably good quality(i e not clayey or too sandy) and your area is a the desired level, little or no excavation may be necessary. In this case, you could hire a rotary hoe or cultivator to work-up the soil, leaving at least 30 mm for the depth of your new turf.
SANDY areas generally will need some excavation, but in many cases adding composted matter to a depth of 100 mm after hoeing or cultivating will be sufficient.
For CLAY areas, you will need to excavate (and remove same) to a depth of 100-150 mm, add some gypsum or clay breaker, and then backfill with a good quality top soil. Gypsum is inexpensive and should be added at the rate of 10kg/100 metres. This work is best tackled by a hiring a bobcat and operator, or if your area is small or has poor access, a dingo and operator.
